What Is a passive motion sensor?

Add motion sensors on the inside and/or outside of a House is a great defense against burglars. And there are many affordable and effective motion detectors for homeowners to choose from. These technologies generally fall into two primary categories: passive or active.

Passive motion sensors make up many of the options that are available for homeowners. Unlike active sensors that constantly signals, received signals passive sensors to detect movement. They have the ability for the measurement of infrared energy. Almost all objects give a radiation that can be read by infrared sensors.

Passive infrared sensors (PIR), also known as tubes detectors, measuring and comparing to determine when there is a significant change in the presence of energy levels. People give out about 9 to 10 micrometer infrared energy and PIR-sensors be used to activate a signal if they are between 8 to 12 micrometers of infrared energy detection.

So what actually detects the energy? A device known as a photo-detector receives infrared energy and measures the wavelengths of light. There is a small mirror situated within the sensor that collects the energy and reflects on a small computer chip. The energy is converted into electrical currents that are read by the small computer to determine whether energy levels are normal.

Many companies use PIR-sensors that are connected with photo-sensor detectors. These have a laser beam that "" reacts when the light of the light beam is blocked. The "reaction" is not always an alarm. For example, most people have heard the ringing noise that some doors make when people enter a store--the sound that is meant to alert store personnel that new customers have walked in. Well, it is this motion sensing technology that allows a device to disable ringing sound when someone enters the shop is activated.

Passive motion sensors are housed in plastic envelopes that can be mounted on walls where they can view an area up to 180 degrees around the sensor. Infrared energy can pass through the plastic casing so that the sensor is still around to detect radiation. It is a special plastic that is "transparent" for incoming infrared energy. The housing is also useful because it is the internal technology against insects, moisture, and dust protects.

Whether you're a home owner or a motion detector, possibly a great investment for you, they are effective home security functions that can be obtained at a low price.
