Storage sheds: how to choose a foundation shed
I wrote this guide for people who are new to a stable building, and tried to stay away from technical terms. I hope it helps you understand barn foundations have so you can make an informed decision about which type you need.
The most basic barn Foundation
If your shed is relatively small--8 "x 12" or smaller--you can build it directly on the ground, as long as it is quite flat and level. As the ground has been unsuccessful, you can adjust the level with a shovel. For long-term use, barn base treated wood.
A foundation gravel based barn
Another great do-it-yourself option is the use of a foundation gravel based barn. This is more work, but is better if you are in an area with a lot of rain or temperature extremes lives. A barn gravel-based foundation has good drainage and is easy to level.
If your shed 8 ' x 12 ' dig, from an area at least 9 ' x 13 '. Fill with gravel and the level. Then you build what's called a pier and beam foundation, with nine 1 "x 1" concrete paving stones in a grid pattern (three rows of three stones, with a stone in every corner, one in the middle and the other four rocks midway between each of the corner stones). Level all the stones.
The next layer your shed basis, is constructed as follows: take three 4 "x 4" treated wood bars the length of your shed and place them in parallel to the ground. Use two bars for the outside edges and put the other beam midway between these two, so it's your center beam. Then nail 2 "x 2" treated wood on the bars for your cross-bars, ranging all the way from end to end. Each tree will cross in the middle and at each end are supported.
Cast concrete objects foundation
The definitive Foundation is poured concrete, but this is generally for larger projects or for people who want to have the job done by a contractor, which is a much more expensive option.
Important:
Once you have created your shed base, it is imperative that the square. Here's how to check: facing your shed, take a measurement of the near left corner of the barn based on the diagonal to the far upper right corner of the barn base. Then take a measurement of the near upper right corner on the diagonal on the far left corner of the barn base
If the two measurements are identical, is your shed base square. If they are not, you need to make some adjustments so that each corner a 90-degree angle. When you are finished building the barn base, double-check that the square, using the same method.
I know from first hand experience what happens when you don't. I built a shed a while back and the most elementary do not do: make sure that the barn was square base. When I started the roof deck, I learned quickly that I had a problem. I had quite a bit of trouble to the square, and that's why I'm and the importance of doing it well.
Some general tips:
